Derby County have signed Stoke City defender Ryan Shotton on loan with a view to a permanent move.
The 25-year-old, who can play in defence or midfield, progressed through the Premier League side's academy.
Shotton made his Potters debut in August 2008 and has had loan spells at Altrincham, Tranmere Rovers, Barnsley and Wigan.
He is in line to make his debut for Derby in the League Cup second round against Charlton Athletic on Tuesday.
"He is someone who we've had our eye on for a while and he will certainly strengthen our defensive options," Rams boss Steve McClaren told the club website, external.
"He is big, strong and has a physical presence, as well as being a good footballer and having Premier League experience to his name."
Shotton made 37 appearances for Stoke in 2011-12 under Tony Pulis, and a further 26 games the following season before moving on loan to Wigan last term.
