Euro 2020: FA confident over Wembley chances of hosting final

The Football Association is confident of Wembley's chances of staging the Euro 2020 final and has not ruled out the possibility of hosting Euro 2028.

FA general secretary Alex Horne hopes England's national stadium could stage the semi-finals and final in six years.

Munich's Allianz Arena is the only other contender and Horne feels the chances are boosted by Germany's focus on a bid for Euro 2024.

"We're really confident with our bid," Horne said.

"We know what the Germans have been saying. We know that they're thinking about 2024, but nothing has been confirmed."

Asked about the prospects of hosting the tournament in full 14 years from now, he added: "I wouldn't rule out looking at 2028."

Euro 2020 will be held in 13 cities, with the semi-finals and final played at the same stadium.

Winning bids will be announced on 19 September and Horne believes one of Dublin, Glasgow and Cardiff could miss out on hosting group games.

Euro 96 was the last major tournament staged in England, while the country also hosted the 1966 World Cup.

The revamped Wembley opened in 2007 and staged the Champions League final in 2011 and 2013.

Horne feels Germany are concentrating heavily on 2024 and added: "I'm not going to dwell on their politics. I'm expecting that they're not going to push very hard, to put it another way.

"They've made it very clear they want 2024 and they're going to have a go at 2024, so they're not going to be pushing hard for the semi-finals and final."
