MK Dons duo Will Grigg and uncapped Ben Reeves in NI squad

Will Grigg and the uncapped Ben Reeves have been named in the Northern Ireland squad to face Hungary in the opening European Championship qualifier on 7 September.

The duo were part of the MK Dons team which dumped Manchester United out of the League Cup on Tuesday night, Grigg scoring twice in the shock 4-0 victory.

Kyle Lafferty returns but United defender Jonny Evans is suspended.

The 26-man squad will be cut prior to Northern Ireland's trip to Budapest.

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill said he was "very impressed" with the displays of Grigg, 23, and Reeves against Manchester United.

Reeves, 22, will hope his impressive midfield display against United earns him a first cap, having previously been part of the squad for the friendly against Cyprus in March.

"Will is someone I brought in when I took the job," said O'Neill.

"He had a difficult year last year at Brentford but he's started well out on loan at MK Dons and to score two goals against United in a game of that nature is fantastic for him and for his confidence.

"Ben is a player we've put a lot of work into to convince him to play for Northern Ireland. He's a young player building his club career and now he has the opportunity on an international level as well.

"He's very good technically and a player I'm quite excited about."

Evans is the only notable absentee.

After recovering from a leg injury, he made his first appearance of the season when captaining Manchester United in their embarrassing defeat by the Dons but sits out the international following his red card against Azerbaijan in October.

A handful of senior players who missed the summer tour of South America, including Chris Brunt, Gareth McAuley, Lafferty and Jamie Ward, all return.

Lafferty is back after making an impressive return to English football since signing for Norwich City.

O'Neill wants the Fermanagh-born striker to play and perform on a more consistent basis for his country during the forthcoming campaign.

"We need someone to step up and score goals and Kyle has scored only once goal in the last three years.

"We just need availability from Kyle to be honest."

Strikers James Gray and Liam Boyce, midfielder Jonny Steele and teenage defender Liam Donnelly drop out of the squad which travelled to Uruguay and Chile at the end of last season.
