England captain Wayne Rooney notched his 41st goal for England

England beat Norway 1-0 in their first game since the World Cup, with new captain Wayne Rooney scoring the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

The Manchester United striker's 68th-minute spot-kick was England's first shot on target, with substitute Danny Welbeck notching their only other effort on goal in the 73rd minute.

So how did Roy Hodgson's England men measure up over the 90 minutes at Wembley?

JOE HART (GOALKEEPER) 7

One moment of mishandling in the first half but redeemed himself with a magnificent one-handed save from Joshua King which prevented Norway taking the lead.

Did you know? Hart has kept a clean sheet in his last three appearances for England at Wembley.

JOHN STONES (RIGHT-BACK) 6

Solid night at right-back, not his favoured position, for the Everton youngster. Untroubled in defence and composed on the ball.

Ex-England defender Phil Neville on BBC Radio 5 live: "John Stones is not out of his depth at this level. He looks solid."

PHIL JONES (CENTRE-BACK) 6

Solid in the first half but England's central defence still looked worryingly vulnerable when the slightest pressure was applied.

Did you know? Jones started in an England victory for the first time since Roy Hodgson's first match, also against Norway.

GARY CAHILL (CENTRE-BACK) 5

Had some uneasy moments, particularly when a poor clearance opened up a presentable chance for Norway. Went off with a slight knock late on.

Did you know? Cahill failed to complete 90 minutes for England in a game in which he featured for the first time since June 2012.

LEIGHTON BAINES (LEFT-BACK) 6

Everton's left-back suffered at the World Cup and was still not quite himself. Not tested particularly in defence and his usually reliable crossing was not at its best.

Did you know? Baines was the only player other than Sterling (seven) to create more than one goalscoring chance in this game (two).

ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN (MIDFIELDER) 6

Few flashes of pace but something of a quiet night for this very talented Arsenal youngster.

Chris Waddle on BBC Radio 5 live: "When he is on the ball out wide, he has got the pace and strength to go around people."

Did you know? England have not lost any of the 16 games in which Oxlade-Chamberlain has played (W10 D6).

JACK WILSHERE (MIDFIELDER) 6

One or two penetrative runs in the first half as manager Roy Hodgson tried out his central midfield partnership with Jordan Henderson, but a fairly low-key display in keeping with the rest of the night.

JORDAN HENDERSON (MIDFIELDER) 6

Worked as hard as ever and looks destined to take on the anchor role in England's midfield for the Euro 2016 campaign.

RAHEEM STERLING (MIDFIELDER) 8

England's most dangerous player, with pace and trickery. He won the penalty that decided the game and will be a major part of Roy Hodgson's game plan in Switzerland.

DANIEL STURRIDGE (FORWARD) 7

So much ability and a real danger in and around the area, but still inclined to be too selfish on occasions and ignore team-mates in much better positions.

Chris Waddle on BBC Radio 5 live: "He is lively, he has got quick feet and has a trick or two. It's just finding the composure to hit the target."

Did you know? Sturridge hit four shots against Norway, twice as many as any other player in the game, but none were on target.

WAYNE ROONEY (FORWARD) 6

Will be delighted to have got his 41st England goal, scored from the penalty spot, but often seemed to be trying a little too hard in his first game since taking on the permanent captaincy.

Chris Waddle on BBC Radio 5 live: "He did not play his normal game. He was trying to force things and he did not need to."

Did you know? Rooney became only the fourth player to score more than 40 goals for England, after Bobby Charlton, Gary Lineker and Jimmy Greaves.

SUBSTITUTES

FABIAN DELPH (MIDFIELDER) 5 - for Jack Wilshere on 69 minutes

Will be delighted to get a debut but made little impact.

Enjoyed a really lively cameo, forcing a save from the keeper and also firing a shot across goal. Has he given Roy Hodgson something to think about ahead of Monday's Euro 2016 qualifier in Switzerland?

Not much chance to get involved in a brief appearance as substitute.
