Franck Ribery: Bayern Munich winger says France career is over

Franck Ribery is a three-time French player of the year.

Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery says he will not change his mind about retirement from France's national team.

Ribery, 31, is set to make his season bow against Stuttgart on Saturday ahead of Bayern hosting Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Uefa president Michel Platini is reported as saying Ribery would be in breach of Fifa regulations should he reject a France call-up.

Ribery said: "I want to concentrate on my club. I will not change my opinion."

He added, in an interview with German newspaper Die Welt: "I took this decision in consultation with (France manager) Didier Deschamps."

Ribery missed the 2014 World Cup in Brazil with a back problem and called time on his international career once the tournament was over, ending his France career with 16 goals from 81 caps.

Ribery came third in the voting for Fifa's Ballon d'Or award for the world's best player in 2013, finishing behind Lionel Messi and winner Cristiano Ronaldo.

He has recovered from a knee injury that kept him out of the opening two Bundesliga matches and said he was not concerned by the politics surrounding his retirement.

Platini, himself a former France international and coach, warned last week that Ribery could be suspended from playing for his club if he rejected an attempt from national coach Deschamps to persuade him to return.

"Franck cannot decide himself whether he plays for France," said Platini in German newspaper, Bild.

Xabi Alonso, Bayern's new signing from Real Madrid, is an injury doubt for the German champions with a foot injury while Netherlands winger Arjen Robben is training alone following an ankle injury.
