Diego Simeone returned to the Atletico Madrid bench as the Spanish champions brushed aside previously-unbeaten Sevilla.

The inspirational Argentine coach was back after serving a La Liga touchline ban and saw his unbeaten team move within two points of leaders Barcelona.

Midfielder Koke opened the scoring with a deflected shot before Saul Niguez nodded in a second before half-time.

A penalty from Raul Garcia and Raul Jimenez's header sealed the victory.

Atletico had not lost any of their opening five matches - and won 2-1 at neighbours Real Madrid - while Simeone was forced to watch from the stands.

But they had not found their top form either, dropping points as they laboured to draws against Rayo Vallecano and Celta Vigo.

However, with Simeone back on the touchline barking out orders, Los Rojiblancos rediscovered their ruthlessness against a shocked Sevilla.

The visitors had won their previous four La Liga matches and, after drawing on the opening weekend, were level on points with Valencia and Barcelona ahead of their trip to the Vicente Calderon.

But they never looked like threatening their hosts, who were forced to rebuild their title-winning side over the summer after losing the likes of Chelsea trio Diego Costa, Thibaut Courtois and Filipe Luis.

Spain midfielder Koke put Atletico ahead with a deflected shot from the edge of the area, before Miranda crossed for teenager Saul to score with a cushioned header.

Raul Garcia converted a late penalty after Sevilla's Daniel Carrico brought down Antoine Griezmann and Mexican striker Jimenez headed in his first Atletico goal from Koke's cross.
