Saido Berahino: West Brom striker has learned from last season

Berahino has scored four top-flight goals in six appearances this season

West Brom striker Saido Berahino says he has learned lessons from last season and is happy to wait patiently for a senior England call-up.

Berahino, 21, has been left out of Roy Hodgson's latest squad despite being tipped for a call-up after five goals in eight games for the Baggies.

He was punched by Baggies team-mate James Morrison in a dressing room row in April after a 3-3 draw with Cardiff.

"I'll never blame anyone for what I went through," said Berahino.

The England Under-21 international irritated his former West Brom manager Steve Clarke when he tweeted "time to be selfish" after being left out of the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa last November.

Berahino also attracted negative headlines with a tweet minutes after West Brom announced Clarke had lost his job in December. The player claimed at the time he was reacting after his car suffered a puncture.

"I put myself in certain situations that gave people the space to talk about me," added Berahino, in an interview with BBC Radio 5 live's Pat Murphy.

"I broke into the Premier League quickly and didn't understand certain things and got naive doing certain stuff. But I've learned from it."

Berahino arrived in the UK from war-torn Burundi as a 10-year-old with his mother and siblings and the family were granted political asylum.

He has scored four top-flight goals in six appearances this season.

But he will have to wait for his senior England chance after Hodgson opted against calling him up for the forthcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia, despite Daniel Sturridge's injury.

Instead, Berahino will prepare for the two-legged Euro 2015 Under-21 play-off with Croatia.

"I'm not going to get carried away and say that I need to get called up," said Berahino. "I know I still have a long way to go and I've still got a lot of things to achieve.

"I'm not going to say I deserve anything at the moment because it's only the start of the season.

"It's nice that people have got nice things to say about me, but I've kind of been in this situation before - when I burst onto the scene in the Premier League.

"I'm just trying to make sure I finish this season strong because I've got my own goals that I set and I'm just trying to make sure West Brom have a good season."
