Rooney Rule: Carlisle boss Keith Curle opposes use in England

Curle has managed at Mansfield, Chester, Torquay and Mansfield

Carlisle United boss Keith Curle says introducing the Rooney Rule to increase the number of black or ethnic minority managers will not work.

Curle, 50, is one of only two black managers working at the 92 clubs in the Premier League and Football League.

The Rooney Rule requires NFL clubs to interview at least one black or ethnic minority candidate for head coach jobs.

But Curle told the Guardian: "I've not seen anything to suggest it would work in English football."

Huddersfield Town's Chris Powell is the only other black manager in the top four tiers of English football.

Anti-racism charity Kick It Out said on Friday that the way English clubs hire new managers is "unfair, exclusive and discriminatory".

Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor wants the Rooney Rule adopted in England, while Dan Rooney, a key architect behind its introduction, told the BBC it would be a "positive" move.

Former England defender Curle was appointed by League Two side Carlisle in September, having managed at four Football League clubs.

He said: "If you said that for every job vacancy from the Premier League to League Two you had to have one non-white manager available for interview, is there going to be a realistic chance of them getting every job?

"Are they just going to be there to tick a box? I don't see the point if you're only going to be there so someone can tick a box."
