Napoli and Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain has now scored five times in his last three Serie A games

Rafael Benitez's Napoli went third in Serie A with victory over Roma.

Gonzalo Higuain gave the hosts an early lead with an acrobatic volley from six yards following Lorenzo Insigne's deflected shot.

Roma, who started the day as joint leaders with Juventus, had chances but Alessandro Florenzi shot wide and also had a shot saved by Rafael Cabral.

But Jose Callejon sealed the win when he collected Higuain's pass and fired past goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis.

It was a deserved victory for Benitez's team, who saw Callejon and Marek Hamsik hit the woodwork, while Callejon also had an effort cleared off the goalline.

The defeat means Roma have now only won two of their past seven matches in all competitions and they are away at German champions Bayern Munich in a vital Champions League tie on Wednesday.

Spanish striker Callejon, Serie A's top goalscorer this season, grabbed his eighth league goal in 10 matches as Napoli clinched their third successive home league win.

The 27-year-old will be hoping to receive his first international cap later this month when his country play a Euro 2016 qualifier against Belarus on 15 November and a friendly against world champions Germany three days later.
