Dover Athletic 1-0 Morecambe

Stefan Payne's first-half strike put Conference strugglers Dover into the second round of the FA Cup with a shock win over League Two side Morecambe.

Former Fulham youngster Payne put Athletic in front when his low shot in first-half stoppage time trickled in.

Sean Francis cleared Alex Kenyon's header off the line to preserve the lead before Tom Murphy's near-post volley almost made it 2-0.

Dover held on to consign Morecambe to a fifth first-round exit in six seasons.

The hosts, who lie just one place above the Conference relegation zone, should have fallen behind when goalkeeper Andy Rafferty made an unconvincing save from Jack Redshaw.

But Dover soon took control and midfielder Chris Kinnear - son of the Whites manager of the same name - forced an excellent save from loanee Joe Lumley.

Payne then struck, and the hosts could have extended their lead after the break but Nicky Deverdics curled a tame effort at Lumley.

Rafferty was twice forced into smart saves in the dying stages as Morecambe pressed for the equaliser.

But the Shrimps slid to their fifth defeat in seven as Dover reached round two for the third time in five seasons.
