McKay netted in each half against Hamilton

Inverness Caledonian Thistle boss John Hughes was "absolutely delighted" to see Billy McKay end his goal drought as the Highlanders went top of the league.

McKay scored twice - his first goals since 9 August - in a 4-2 Scottish Premiership win over Hamilton.

"He's just been a little bit unlucky," said Hughes.

"Hopefully that's the monkey off his back and he can get going, get back to scoring goals. Billy McKay's a natural goalscorer."

All three of McKay's goals this season have come against Hamilton and Hughes is confident the Northern Ireland international can recapture his prolific form of previous seasons.

"He's had a wee barren spell and been taking a bit of flak in the dressing room," explained the manager.

"He's a big character in the dressing room - small in stature but the boys look up to him for that inspiration.

"I don't think with the barren spell he's had, he'll score the goals that he did last year but he'll get way into double figures."

Hughes felt his side were deserving winners against Hamilton but insists he was never certain of the result until the full-time whistle blew.

"Today, we've really merited the victory," he added.

"Hamilton can take great pride in what they're doing. On another day, it might've been their day but we were worthy of the victory."
