Euro 2016: Republic of Ireland call up McGoldrick & Christie

David McGoldrick has also played for Southampton and Nottingham Forest

David McGoldrick and Cyrus Christie have received their first Republic of Ireland call-ups for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Scotland in Glasgow.

Ipswich striker McGoldrick and Derby County defender Christie are in the final squad after their eligibility documentation was finalised last week.

Marc Wilson (hamstring) and Glenn Whelan (leg fracture) are ruled out while James McCarthy is doubtful.

The Everton midfielder suffered a hamstring injury against Sunderland.

McCarthy will travel to Dublin to have his fitness assessed by the Republic's medical team ahead of the matches against Scotland and the United States.

He played the full 90 minutes of his side's 1-1 draw at Sunderland on Sunday but came off the pitch complaining of a hamstring injury.

"It is a bit of a concern because he had the same injury a few weeks back when he missed the game against Manchester United and it is in that area," said Everton boss Roberto Martinez.

"We are hoping that it is more fatigue than a soft tissue problem."

The squad has been reduced from 35 to 27 with Brian Lenihan, Stephen Kelly, Paul McShane, Damien Delaney, Shane Duffy, Paul Green, Simon Cox and Conor Sammon dropping out.

Wilson is out after picking up the injury in Stoke City's 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Republic manager Martin O'Neill watched the game in which Jon Walters scored for City.

Whelan suffered the fracture in the 1-1 draw with Germany earlier this month and the Stoke City forward was expected to be sidelined for around six weeks.

McGoldrick and Christie qualify through having Irish grandparents.

Nottingham-born McGoldrick, who was adopted, discovered his Irish heritage after researching his ancestors.

The Republic are level on points with Group D leaders Poland after three qualifiers, with the Scots three points behind in fourth.

Four days after the clash with the Scots, the Irish play USA in a friendly at the Aviva Stadium.
