Accrington Stanley 2-1 Notts County

  • Published

Marcus Carver grabbed a second-half winner as Accrington Stanley came from behind to earn a shock FA Cup first-round replay victory over League One promotion hopefuls Notts County.

The League Two side, who are 35 league places below Notts, trailed when Ronan Murray fired in after a half-clearance.

But the hosts, who earned a replay with a dour draw at Meadow Lane, deservedly levelled through Luke Joyce's header.

And Carver's looped shot earned a second-round home tie against Yeovil.

Notts, who had lost only once in 14 games and sit fourth in League One, had looked on course to secure that fixture after a bright start and Murray's cool finish.

They also had strong claims for a penalty turned down when Garry Thompson appeared to have been fouled by Accrington keeper Jack Rose.

But Stanley, who sit 15th in League Two, started to dominate after that and their pressure was rewarded when some great work on the right flank ended with Joyce stooping to head home from close range just before the break.

Notts continued to be on the back foot after the turnaround and Carver ended a run of eight games without a goal when his shot looped past Roy Carroll and into the net.

The Magpies very nearly levelled through substitute Jake Cassidy but his effort hit the woodwork and Accrington held on with relative ease after that.
