  1. Batting struggles continue as England lose ODI series to New Zealandpublished at 07:32 GMT 29 October

So it's another ODI defeat for England. That is becoming familiar.

Of more immediate concern is the batting with the top order unable to get any real time in the middle before the Ashes.

For full details of what happened overnight have a read of Timothy Abraham's match report.

Reaction from Harry Brook and Mitchell Santner is below.

The third ODI begins in the early hours of Saturday. Don't forget there's also the small matter of a World Cup semi-final in a few hours.

There is not a 50-over World Cup until late 2027 so there is time to correct this slide.

England will stay eighth in the world rankings even if they lose this series 3-0.

Remember they will likely need to finish in the top nine to qualify automatically for that tournament in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Don’t think we should be panicking at all about our chances in the Ashes. Australia's batting line up is just as fragile. And as we have seen today in Jofra Archer we have a fantastic bowler to run through their top order. Add the likes of Wood, Atkinson to that and I think we are going to be very competitive this winter down under.

Of course lots of the focus is on the Ashes which starts in three weeks.

England are using this series to aid their preparations.

But they have now lost 11 of their past 15 ODIs.

They have played seven series since the 2023 World Cup and lost six of them. They also exited the Champions Trophy without winning a match.

Their 50-over form is a real problem.

The only positive from England's day was Jofra Archer. He was the pick of England's bowlers yet again.

He began with a five-over spell of 1-8 in which he was unlucky not to take further wickets after pinning Will Young lbw in his first over.

Archer bowled 51 dots from his 60 deliveries and reached 145.2kph (90.2mph). His second spell was just as quick as his first in which he added the wickets of Rachin Ravindra and Michael Bracewell.

  6. 'He's a world class bowler'published at 07:17 GMT 29 October

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner: "It was a great game from us. I thought the boys were exceptional. There probably wasn't as much in it [the pitch] as we thought, but to restrict a team to 170 is a pretty good effort.

"We knew it was going to be a challenging chase, especially with the likes of Carse and Archer. Kane and Rachin did a hell of a job to get us through the powerplay and get a bit of momentum for us."

On Blair Tickner: "It's a credit to him, he's a world class bowler. Ticks was outstanding, bowling into the wind, he kept bashing away."

  7. 'We have got to come back stronger'published at 07:14 GMT 29 October

England captain Harry Brook: "Disappointing to say the least. We have got to come back stronger and better and hopefully get at least one win against these boys who are second in the rankings."

On the conditions: "It is very similar to England. It does a bit with the new ball. They are nice wickets to bat on. It is just trying to get through the first 15 or 20 balls of your innings."

On England's approach and ODI struggles: "We want to go out and entertain the world. It was only two or three games ago we got 400 against South Africa. It is not far away. Hopefully we can have a good game on Saturday."

On Jofra Archer's impressive performance: "He is an awesome bowler. Everyone loves watching him - 90-95mph and hoops both ways. For him to bowl 3-23 is amazing. It is awesome to have him back."

I think we need to stick with this batting line-up. Joe Root's class is permanent, as is the rest of this batting lineup.

  9. 'It's pretty special'published at 07:09 GMT 29 October

Player of the match Blair Tickner: "It felt really good, I didn't expect it, I just thought I was going to run some drinks. Last night I was having a BBQ and I saw a message. It's awesome to play.

"Taking early wickets is the way it goes. The boys up front did well and I just finished the job off.

"I had a bit of a long winter in England. I'm just enjoying my cricket, see where it goes. No pressure for me, I'm just going back to the domestic grind, I'm alright. You never know when your last game is, so it's pretty special."

The worst of that performance happened while most in the UK were sleeping.

England were bowled out for 175 in just 36 overs as their top order failed again.

Ben Duckett never got going at all before edging behind in the second over.

Jamie Smith got to 13, had struck one four and a six, before slicing a catch to point when trying to clear the ropes again. Similarly, Jacob Bethell hung around for 45 minutes and made 18 but pulled straight to deep square leg.

Joe Root was the one to be a bit unlucky. He was caught down the leg side for 25.

It was all that complacent talk from Stuart Broad et al about it being the worst Aussie team in a decade, England's best chance to win down under blah blah etc that had me panicking. Hopefully this batting debacle will put a stop to that little narrative/fantasy.

Brendon McCullum will never let the mood in the camp drop but this series is doing little to create a feel-good factor for those on the outside.

The third match in this series begins in the early hours of Saturday morning. England could do with some top-order runs.

It's going to be a loooong winter down under Well, a long winter of short batting performances and innings defeats, so at least each Test will be short and sharp suffering.

Another comprehensive victory for the hosts. New Zealand get to their target with 101 balls remaining.

Jofra Archer bowled well, the others were OK. England just didn't have enough runs on the board.

Mitchell Santner has his specs on and is bashing the ball around in a way Clark Kent would be proud of.

Jamie Overton's over ends with a six and now New Zealand are just three runs away from victory.

Just waking up in the UK? It has been another poor night of batting from England. They were bowled out for 175 in 36 overs on a pretty flat pitch in Hamilton and are now on the brink of defeat.

The collapse was not as dramatic as in Mount Maunagnui.

Ben Duckett was out for one but Jamie Smith, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook all made double figures before getting out.

Root was maybe a little unlucky to be caught down the leg side.

Jamie Smith sliced a catch to point while aiming somewhere over mid-wicket. Bethell pulled straight to deep square leg. Even Brook, who again looked the best of the batters in reaching 34, slashed a cut to backward point having looked good.

The positive has been Jofra Archer. He has bowled 10 excellent overs to return figures of 3-23 in his first outing of the winter. He bowled four maidens, plus 51 dots in his 60 deliveries.

  17. NZ 158-5published at 32 overs

Need 18 more runs to win

This will be England's 11th defeat in their past 15 ODIs and their fifth series defeat from six. That doesn't include their shoddy Champions Trophy and 2023 World Cup campaigns either.

  18. 6 runs

    NZ 152-6published at 31.3 overs

Hooked onto the grassy bank by Mitchell Santner. Drinks hasn't stopped the hosts' momentum.

  19. drinks break

Energy drinks are coming onto the field but it'll soon be New Zealand downing something stronger. The series victory is almost theirs.

  20. 50 runs

50 for Daryl Mitchellpublished at 30.5 overs

Now Daryl Mitchell reverse sweeps for four.

He goes to a second fifty in as many innings. New Zealand are closing in.
