Norwich City manager Neil Adams says he has no issue with new first-team coach Mike Phelan being perceived as a threat to his job.

Phelan, 52, was assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson for five years at Manchester United until 2013.

"What I won't do is get somebody in who isn't a threat. You need to get the best and it isn't a problem for me at all," Adams told BBC Radio Norfolk.

"It's not a problem. I wanted to get the best coach."

Phelan was part of Gary Megson's backroom team at Carrow Road between 1995 and 1996, when Adams was a Canaries player.

He went on to win three Premier League titles and the Champions League during his time as Ferguson's assistant at Old Trafford, but has spoken of his desire to go into management.

Phelan has replaced Mark Robson, who was sacked by Norwich last week, but despite a run of just one win in eight, Adams insisted the change was not results-related.

"We need to be 100% together as a group. We had a few issues and I probably should have dealt with it earlier," he said.

"I can't allow anything to detract from where we want to go. That means players, staff, whoever.

"It was my choice, my decision. We needed to make a change.

"The change wasn't because of our results. People made Mark out to be a scapegoat, which is as far from the truth as you can get."
