Crewe Alexandra have signed Wycombe Wanderers defender Anthony Stewart on loan following his rejection of a new deal with the League Two club.

The move has proved complicated, as 22-year-old centre-half Stewart is not under contract at Adams Park after refusing an extension in the summer.

But the Chairboys have retained his registration as he is still under 24.

Stewart already a winner at Gresty Road

Anthony Stewart was in the Wycombe Wanderers team that knocked Crewe out of the FA Cup last season in a first round replay at Gresty Road, having lost to them 4-1 at the same stage a year earlier.

"We can keep him until January and they retain their right to compensation for him," Crewe manager Steve Davis said.

"But it gives us the chance of a longer look at him." Davis told BBC Radio Stoke.

Stewart has made 65 appearances for Wycombe, scoring four goals, and was a regular member of the side over the last two seasons.
