Coventry City have signed Everton's England Under-19 defender Matthew Pennington on loan until 4 January.

The 20-year-old had two loan spells at Tranmere Rovers last season, playing in the second of their two victories over the Sky Blues in February.

"Matthew impressed us when we played against them at Prenton Park," City boss Steven Pressley told BBC Sport.

Pennington's footballing pedigree

Warrington-born Pennington is yet to make his Everton debut, his first team experience so far being limited to his 17 appearances on loan at Tranmere.

"He is a versatile defender who has featured regularly for Everton Under-21s this season."

Pennington can play in central defence or at right-back, which Pressley admitted was an added factor.

"He can fill a variety of positions across the back line which will be invaluable over the Christmas period," Pressley told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire.

Pennington joins the Sky Blues at a time when they lie 18th in League One, having been kept out of the bottom four only by last Saturday's first away win of the season at Colchester.
