Juan Cala's contract with Cardiff City has been terminated by mutual consent.

The 25-year-old Spanish defender leaves the Championship side with immediate effect.

Cala recently took to social media to express his discontent at training with the Bluebirds' academy players, and was expected to depart in January.

A spokesman for the club told BBC Wales Sport: "We would like to thank Juan for his contribution and wish him the very best for his future."

Centre-back Cala joined Cardiff from Sevilla in February 2014 and featured for them in the Premier League last season.

But he made only one Championship appearance this season.

On Twitter Cala said: "I wish to apologise to Tan Sri Vincent Tan for my recent comments. He had nothing to do with my move to the academy."

Cardiff City manager Russell Slade told Sport Wales the move was best for both parties.

"I was honest with his people," said Slade.

"We had a meeting and it was decided a good few weeks ago that his future lied elsewhere."
