Ivan Toney: Chris Wilder expects more bids for Northampton striker

Northampton-born Toney was the club's youngest ever first team player

Northampton Town manager Chris Wilder expects Ivan Toney to be the subject of more bids in January, after his move to Wolves fell through in November.

The 18-year-old striker was set to join the Championship side for a club record fee received, initially on loan.

Wilder told BBC Radio Northampton: "It was a difficult week for Ivan. He was virtually up the road and signed.

"If he carries on the way he has been, his performances have attracted not just Wolves, but a lot of other clubs."

Wilder added: "There were a few things that resulted in that deal not going through. There's been a lot said about the reasons why - we need to keep that confidential.

"He's not missed any football for us (because of injury). He's fit and healthy. We expect him to play and to have a career with a lot of games."

The Cobblers allowed striker Alex Nicholls to leave before the loan window closed, leaving the League Two side with Toney, top scorer Marc Richards, Emile Sinclair and David Moyo up front.

Toney has scored six goals this season, including against Wolves in the League Cup, but sat out Saturday's defeat by Southend.

"There will be a lot of interest and it's important Ivan keeps his feet on the ground and keeps working extremely hard," said Wilder.

"He's done ever so well for us so far in his short career here at Northampton and when he's available and gets himself going, he's an asset to us."
