Darren Ferguson failed to win promotion back to the Championship last season

Peterborough United legend Tommy Robson believes manager Darren Ferguson will rescue Posh's League One season.

Ferguson is coming under increasing pressure after dropping from second to ninth in the last six games.

Robson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "He knows he needs to turn it around. We're dropping down the league like a stone. But he will get there.

"He puts his heart on the line and is thinking of how to get the lads playing together as quickly as possible."

Posh looked like promotion contenders after winning eight of their first 13 games of the season, but they are winless in their last six and suffered a 3-0 defeat by leaders Bristol City on Friday, with a large number of supporters booing at the final whistle.

Ferguson had been without forward Marcus Maddison for four weeks until his return at the weekend.

And the reformed strike partnership of Craig Mackail-Smith and Aaron McLean has only had one game to gel following their respective loan moves from Brighton and Bradford last week.

"As a manager, time is your enemy, particularly when things are going wrong," said Robson, who played almost 500 times for Peterborough between 1969 and 1981.

"We have two lads up front that haven't played with each other for a long time.

"Everybody needs to get used to each other. That takes time. A team doesn't just gel. I'm sure Darren is working his heart out to make that work as quickly possible."
