Colchester United: Kaspars Gorkss stay 'aided' by FA Cup run

Colchester United chairman Robbie Cowling has said an FA Cup windfall could help extend Kaspars Gorkss' stay.

The 33-year-old former QPR defender has signed a four-week deal with the U's and played in Sunday's 1-0 second-round win over Peterborough United.

"When we get into the next window we can have a look at things and see where we stand," Cowling told BBC Essex.

"Obviously budgets are limited these days, if we can have a really good cup run that would help us again."

Kaspars Gorkss has continued to play for the Latvian national team since being released by Reading in the summer

Gorkss spent three years at QPR, playing 124 games, before joining Reading in 2011.

The Latvian also had spells with Blackpool and Wolves, but has been without a club since he was released by the Royals in the summer.

"Credit to Kaspars, he still wants to play football," said Cowling.

"We've given him the chance to do that again and put himself in the shop window.

"It's not like we had to bust the bank to do it, because he has made his money and he wants to come and play football.

"It's four weeks at the moment. Which is wise from both sides."
