Gordon Greer: Brighton players have let boss Sami Hyypia down

Greer has made 189 appearances for Brighton and recently signed a new deal until the summer of 2016

Brighton captain Gordon Greer says the squad must take some responsibility for their Championship struggles and that they have let boss Sami Hyypia down.

The Seagulls are 22nd, three points from safety, having won just one of their last 17 league games.

"We feel we have let the manager down as a group of players," 34-year-old centre-back Greer told BBC Sussex.

"We have not been good enough and have had chats about it amongst the players. We feel we can do a lot better."

Brighton have won just three of their 21 league games this season under Hyypia, who was appointed on a three-year deal in June.

A section of Albion's support displayed a banner calling for the 41-year-old Finn to be sacked during the 1-0 defeat at home by Millwall last Friday.

"I was at the game on Friday night and I heard a minority of fans turning against the manager," Scotland international Greer, who was forced to watch from the stands because of injury, added.

"I just felt we needed to take our fair share of responsibility as well.

"In the last week or 10 days the penny has dropped for a few people that we are in a fight at the bottom to get out of this mess."

Hyypia won the FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League and UEFA Cup as a player at Liverpool

Greer, currently sidelined by a knee problem, dismissed any notion that the players had lost confidence in Hyypia.

"When things aren't going so well there are going to be rumours and stuff like that," he said.

"It couldn't be further from the truth. If anything it has galvanised the dressing room, the manager and the club.

"Everybody is taking a look at themselves in the mirror and asking 'am I doing everything I can to help the team?'.

"We are right behind the gaffer. Any of the players in the dressing room would say the same thing."
