David Forde: Millwall uncertainty could explain league struggles

Forde has made over 300 appearances for Millwall since joining from Cardiff in 2008

Millwall goalkeeper David Forde says the uncertain futures of several players could explain their struggles in the Championship this season.

The Lions, who are 22nd in the table, have over 20 players out of contract this summer.

"Players are all human. There are a lot thinking 'where is the next contract?'," he told BBC London 94.9.

"Maybe there was a slight taking the eye off the ball. It probably hasn't helped or contributed to our form."

The 35-year-old Republic of Ireland international added: "We know what we have to do and we need to rectify that - whether it is a case of some players coming in or the club sorting some players out.

"It is a really difficult scenario for the club and the manager to be in.

"It is January now and the transfer window is open. Obviously they have got their plans for what they want to do for the future."

Millwall have won just one of their last 10 league games but Forde denies any suggestion that there is a lack of commitment at The Den.

"I think everybody is giving it their all," he said. "I think we have been unfortunate in a lot of games.

"I know you can keep saying that but this league is [about] small margins. If you are off your game by two, three or five percent it could make all the difference.

"It's disappointing we started the season so well and all of a sudden the wheels have come off.

"The group itself is positive. The form hasn't been too bad but we haven't had the breaks or a bit of luck."

Lions boss Ian Holloway has already brought in forward Paris Cowan-Hall and left-back Dan Harding this month, with three players leaving the south London club.

Forde, who has made over 300 appearances since joining Millwall in 2008, believes further additions to the squad would give them a boost.

"It can strengthen us," he said. "I think it will do because we need that little lift. Hopefully someone can come in and galvanise us and we can getting some wins together.

"There are still 22 games and a lot of football left to play."
