Gennaro Gattuso took up his first managerial job at Swiss club FRC Sion

Italian World Cup winner Gennaro Gattuso has applied for the job as manager of Hamilton Academical.

The 37-year-old spent 14 months in Scotland with Rangers, leaving Ibrox for Salernitana in 1998.

Capped 73 times, Gattuso went on to spend 13 years as a midfielder for AC Milan and was a key player in Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning team.

Former Celtic striker John Hartson is also interested in succeeding Alex Neil at New Douglas Park.

Neil left to join Norwich last week, with captain Martin Canning currently combining his role as a player with that of interim manager.

Hartson, 39, played 51 games for Wales and counts Arsenal and West Ham among his former clubs but has no managerial experience.

Gattuso has had brief spells in charge at FC Sion, Palermo and, most recently, OFI Crete.
