Dundee 1-0 Kilmarnock: Hartley delighted by Dee character

Dundee manager Paul Hartley hailed his side's response to their January derby mauling after watching them beat Kilmarnock 1-0.

The Dens Park men have picked up two wins and two draws since being dismantled 6-2 by city rivals United on New Year's Day.

And Hartley's side went seventh in the table after Greg Stewart scored a penalty to see off Killie at Dens Park.

"Since the derby game we've had a great response from them," Hartley told BBC Scotland.

"They were hurting after that and it's showed over the last four games that we've got a really good group of players here. They fight for each other and they've got great attitude and desire.

"We're three points off the top six and we'll fight for it and have a go. We want to try to finish as far up the table as possible.

"In overall play tonight we played some really good stuff. We had some good chances and some of the football was excellent.

"I know [Dundee goalkeeper] Scott Bain had some good saves to make in the first half but I thought in the second half we were pretty comfortable. He's such a talented goalkeeper and we needed him on those occasions tonight."

The Dens Park boss is now hopeful he can add to his squad this month to aid their bid for a top-six finish.

"I don't know if there will be money to spend on transfer fees but there might be room for one or two to come in, possibly loans," he added.

"We're working hard on that and hopefully we'll hear something in the next day or so about bringing a player in."

Kilmarnock manager Allan Johnston reckons his side, who have lost their last three league games, are lacking a cutting edge.

"We started the better team, had the bulk of possession and their keeper pulled off two great saves - that kind of sums up our luck at the moment," he told BBC Scotland.

"I think we were dominating in the final third, it's just that bit of quality and bit of imagination we were lacking tonight. We passed the ball very well and kept possession very well, but we've got to threaten teams more.

"For the amount of possession we had in the second half there has to be more crosses coming into the box, there's got to be more shots on target and we have to work their keeper more.

"The league's really tight and we've got to look at the teams above us, we've still got a really good chance if we put a run together but we need to start winning games like this.

"You're always hoping you can strengthen and it would be nice to bring in somebody that can put in a few goals for us so we just have to wait and see."
