Ashley Grimes scored his first goal for Walsall to secure a hard-fought draw against Gillingham.

The Saddlers created several opportunities for Tom Bradshaw, but he was unable to find the net before being taken off with a hamstring problem.

The visitors took the lead when a long ball over the top found Bradley Dack and the midfielder finished well.

Grimes, on for Bradshaw, scored his first goal in 26 appearances when he drilled in from close range.

Saddlers in market for Sunday football

Sunday's unusual kick-off time was to avoid a clash with the lucrative weekly Sunday market at Bescot, a long-standing money-spinner for Walsall. The game had to be put back from Saturday to allow Gillingham extra time to recover from Thursday night's JPT tie at Bristol City

Romaine Sawyers wasted a good opportunity late on as the hosts pushed forward looking for a winner.

Walsall remain 15th in League One, five points away from the play-off places, while Gillingham are two points further adrift.
