Justin Edinburgh managed Rushden & Diamonds before taking charge of Newport

Justin Edinburgh will rank among Newport County's greatest managers even if he leaves for Gillingham, says former County defender Byron Anthony.

The Gills have made an approach for Edinburgh, who is believed to want to join the League One side.

If the 45-year-old does depart, Anthony believes his reign will be remembered fondly at Rodney Parade.

"He will probably go down as one of the best managers in Newport County's history," said Anthony.

"To take the club into the Football League after 25 years out of it is a massive achievement.

"He has done a phenomenal job, considering the budget that we have been working with."

Edinburgh recently agreed a contract extension until 2017, after he was initially linked with a move to Gillingham following their sacking of Peter Taylor in December.

However, the former Tottenham and Portsmouth defender has not yet signed the new deal.

Edinburgh succeeded Anthony Hudson as Exiles manager in October 2011, winning promotion from the Conference in 2013.

Newport have had an excellent season so far and, despite losing their last three games, they remain in the League Two play-off zone.

Anthony believes a swift resolution to Edinburgh's situation could help County to return to winning ways.

"It's a difficult time for players," he added.

"In this case and trying to think of the long term, the sooner the decision can be made the better."
