Tony Vance had guided his side to five wins in a row before their loss at Burgess Hill

Guernsey FC's recent good run of form came to an end as they were beaten 3-0 by Isthmian League Division One leaders Burgess Hill Town.

Marc McGrath missed an early penalty before a goal from Lee Harding and two from Pat Harding sealed the points for the unbeaten league leaders.

"I don't think it was a 3-0 game to be fair," Green Lions boss Tony Vance told BBC Radio Guernsey.

"We played pretty well, we just couldn't break them down."

The defeat was Guernsey's first since the middle of December and ended a run of five successive wins.

Guernsey FC's recent good form

13 December: Beat Whitstable Town 4-3 (a)

17 December: Lost to Worthing 4-3 (a)

20 December: Beat Sittingbourne 2-0 (a)

27 December: Beat Redhill 3-1 (h)

10 January: Beat Corinthian Casuals 3-0 (h)

17 January: Beat Walton and Hersham 3-0 (a)

24 January: Beat Tooting and Mitcham United 3-2 (h)

7 February: Lost 3-0 at Burgess Hill Town

Vance was quick to defend top-scorer McGrath after his miss from the spot in the opening minutes.

He said: "Goals do win matches, psychologically they're a massive part of the game.

"I'm not going to blame him at all because he'd scored three out of three and is the top scorer for us - and one of the top five in the league.

"Burgess Hill are flying high and top of the league, so that's probably not three points that we earmarked that we would gain, but we have to beat all the teams in and around us that are chasing.

"We've got a tough period coming up where we play all the top-four sides, so we have to try and get some points off them."
