Inigo Calderon and Joao Teixeira both scored twice as Brighton beat Birmingham in a seven-goal thriller.

Portuguese midfielder Teixeira drove in to put the hosts ahead before Clayton Donaldson steered home a leveller.

Blues' Paul Caddis missed a penalty and they were made to pay as Calderon and Teixeira both scored from close range.

Wes Thomas pulled one back with a low shot but Calderon restored the two-goal lead before substitute Lee Novak scored a consolation for Birmingham.

Brighton, who went into the game without a win in five, move up to 20th in the table, while Gary Rowett's Birmingham have now not tasted victory since the 3-1 win over Wigan on 10 January.

The turning point in the game came on the stroke of half-time when Birmingham were awarded a spot-kick after Albion defender Bruno Saltor brought Andrew Shinnie down in the box.

Caddis stepped up but David Stockdale dived full length to his left to pull off a fine save and keep the score 1-1 at half-time.

The hosts went ahead early on as Teixeira, on loan from Liverpool, cut in from the left and fired in a low, right-footed shot which went under keeper Darren Randolph.

The advantage only lasted five minutes as Donaldson guided Stephen Gleeson's shot into the net.

After the break, Chris Hughton's Brighton regained the lead as Calderon slotted in from six yards and Teixeira soon made it 3-1 after Randolph could only parry Sam Baldock's goal-bound effort.

Thomas gave the visitors some hope with his sixth goal of the season as he turned neatly inside the area and placed his strike into the bottom left corner.

However former Alicante right-back Calderon all but sealed the win five minutes from time as he scored from Lewis Dunk's flick on.

Novak made for a nervous final couple of minutes with a stoppage-time goal, but Brighton held on to move three points clear of the relegation zone.

Brighton manager Chris Hughton:

"To get four goals is very pleasing. I'm delighted with the four goals but at the same time a little frustrated. We should have made the game safer in the second half.

"We knew it would be tough as Birmingham were going for it. The goals we gave away were poor and we need to do better."

Birmingham manager Gary Rowett:

"It was not a great performance by any stretch of the imagination.

"The penalty miss gave Brighton a massive lift and although I was pleased with the impact that our substitutes Wesley Thomas and Lee Novak made, a point possibly would have flattered us."
