York City dropped to within a point of the relegation zone as Northampton ran out comfortable winners at Sixfields.
Chris Hackett fired the Cobblers ahead in the fourth minute, finding space inside the box to beat Bobby Olejnik.
Brendan Moloney added a second as he slotted home from the edge of the box for his first goal for the club.
Marc Richards saw a penalty saved for the hosts after Ricky Holmes was fouled, but Ivan Toney added a late third with a stunning strike.
Northampton rise to 10th, still eight points from the play-offs, while York have now picked up one win from their last nine League Two games.
Northampton Town manager Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Northampton:
"There were really good performances all over the pitch and I'm really enjoying watching my team.
"The full-backs were really good today and they gave us the license to go forward. It was a team effort full of quality.
"I want us to take the handbrake off, I want us to attack and to entertain. We just want to keep our season alive."
York City manager Russ Wilcox told BBC Radio York:
"I've got to be careful what I say, I'm raging at the moment.
"You feel you've turned the corner and we can move forward up the league and we produce that.
"I feel sorry for the supporters, who have travelled a long way and spent a lot of money. Apologies to them for that showing.
"The story of the game today was individual errors and it's cost us the game."
