Ward was expected to return to Cheltenham where he spent nearly four years as manager

Cheltenham Town have scrapped plans to appoint a director of football after John Ward turned down the role.

The League Two club intended to bring in someone to work with caretaker boss Russell Milton, who has been placed in charge for the rest of the season.

They hoped to bring back Ward, who was Cheltenham manager between 2003 and 2007 and has also managed Bristol Rovers and Bristol City.

However, Ward, 63, decided against a return to Whaddon Road.

"John, in the end, decided he didn't want it," chairman Paul Baker told the club's website.

"It was disappointing because he was probably the natural choice - given the fact that we know him so well and he's got a love and passion for the club.

"He didn't feel it was right for him at this time and I absolutely respect that. We ended the conversation as good friends."

Cheltenham are currently one off the bottom of the table.
