Wes Brown: Sunderland win red card appeal after Man Utd loss

The Football Association has rescinded the red card given to Sunderland defender Wes Brown during Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Manchester United.

Brown was sent off despite television pictures suggesting John O'Shea had fouled on United's Radamel Falcao.

"An independent regulatory commission has upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal," read an FA statement.

Brown's red card will not be transferred to O'Shea so both are available for Tuesday's game at Hull.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) said Brown's dismissal was not a case of mistaken identity as referee Roger East thought the 35-year-old had fouled Falcao.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet praised "the honesty" of the referee, the FA, PGMOL and the Premier League for resolving the issue.

He added: "It's very important for me and for English football, the way everything has been dealt with.

"One of the best things in life - and football is part of our life - is to live by the rules and be honest."

The 65th-minute incident led to a United penalty, which was converted by Wayne Rooney. The England captain added a second after 86 minutes.
