Scottish FA opposes Team GB for Rio Olympics in 2016

The Scottish FA is firmly against the idea of Great Britain football teams competing at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

The English FA would like to field a men's and women's team for the Games, but the SFA fears participation would threaten the country's independent status within Fifa.

It is understood it would not, however, stop players from competing.

"We have been consistently clear in our opposition to Team GB," an SFA spokesperson said.

The Scottish game's governing body explained that its opposition stems from the "threat it poses to our independent membership of Fifa and also our representation on the International Football Association Board".

At the London Olympics in 2012, Team GB entered football sides in the men's and women's competitions.

No Scots were included in the men's team, but midfielder Kim Little and defender Ifeoma Dieke made it into the women's squad.

Welsh FA president Trefor Lloyd Hughes revealed he is "livid" about the English FA's plans to enter two Great Britain teams at Rio.
