Motherwell: Goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen leaves Fir Park

Gunnar Neilson had two spells at Motherwell.

Faroese goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen has left Motherwell by mutual consent, the club have confirmed.

The 28-year-old former Blackburn Rovers and Man City man had signed in the summer of 2013 and made 23 starts in two spells for the Fir Park club.

Nielsen has not played for Motherwell this season and last made an appearance in April.

However, Dan Twardzik had taken over as number one until George Long arrived on loan from Sheffield United in January.

Meanwhile, manager Ian Baraclough has warned supporters not to expect miracles from returning striker Scott McDonald.

"It's not all on Scott McDonald's shoulders and everyone knows that," he said.

"It's not suddenly turned into the Scott McDonald show and he will be the first one to say that.

"He is a small cog in a big engine that is driving very, very hard to make sure we are in this division next season."

The 31-year-old McDonald is in his second spell for the Steelmen and made his second debut in the 2-1 win over Inverness.

Motherwell are in the midst of a relegation battle and remain bottom of the table despite Saturday's win, their first victory in nine matches.

"We have had several new arrivals come in since January and they have all contributed to an uplift in form and fitness," said Baraclough.

"The guys who were here when I first took over have upped their efforts and levels as well.

"They have risen to the challenge and are giving me problems as to who I pick on a Saturday.

"Everybody is to be commended on the way they are applying themselves. We need a strong group and we saw that coming to the fore on Saturday, not just the arrival of one person."
