Jersey's men and women both draw with Royal Navy

Jersey's men's and women's sides continued their preparations for this summer's Island Games with draws against the Royal Navy.

Jodie Botterill's strike just before the hour mark put the women's team ahead at JTC Park, but Nathalie Collier's late header made it 1-1.

Jersey's men later battled out a goalless draw at nearby St Peter.

They had to play the last 20 minutes with 10 men after Max Thompson was sent off for a two-footed tackle.

They had gone close in the first half when Craig Leitch hit a dipping effort which narrowly went over, while at the other end the Royal Navy came closest to breaking the deadlock when Ben Chambers' powerful effort hit the bar.

"I thought it was an excellent result, with us being down to 10 men," boss Jimmy Reilly told BBC Radio Jersey.

"The boys did really well, they dug deep and showed a lot of commitment and desire.

"I thought when Max went on in the second half he was doing excellently and he's done that tackle, but he's a young lad, he'll learn and we'll move on."

The matches had originally been scheduled to be the island's first on the resurfaced 3G pitch at Springfield Stadium, but the new artificial turf was not ready in time.

In the women's game, Simon Petulla took charge of Jersey for the first time and described Botterill's performance as "outstanding".

He said: "The goal came about after a through-ball, I think by Eve Watson, and Jodie's pace took her through the defence and she rounded the keeper and coolly slotted it away from a tight angle.

"I'm delighted with a 1-1 draw, we knew it was going to be a very hard game. To take the lead and lose it right at the end was a bit harsh but a draw was probably a fair result."

Jersey will host the Island Games between 27 June and 3 July, with the football tournaments featuring 16 men's teams and 11 women's sides.
