Barry Smith has resigned from his position as manager of Scottish Championship side Alloa Athletic.

The former Dundee boss replaced Paul Hartley at Recreation Park last January and in December led them to the Challenge Cup final with the club's first win over Rangers in the semi.

Since then, the Wasps have won only once in 13 league matches and sit second bottom of the Championship.

Smith, 41, said in December he was keen to return to full-time club management.

A statement posted on the Alloa website after Saturday's 1-0 defeat away to Dumbarton said: "The club can confirm that we have reluctantly accepted the resignation of manager Barry Smith."

Alloa will play Livingston in the Challenge Cup final on 5 April.
