Emma Hayes: Chelsea boss hails 'wonderful' Gemma Davison debut

Gemma Davison, 27, scored four goals in 14 league appearances for champions Liverpool last season

Chelsea Ladies boss Emma Hayes has said she is "proud" of winger Gemma Davison after her match-winning brace saw the Blues beat Notts County 2-1 on Sunday.

The 27-year-old, who joined the club from reigning WSL 1 champions Liverpool in November, was making her first league appearance for the London club.

"It was a wonderful debut," Hayes told BBC Sport.

"I'm very proud of Gemma. For her to deliver in the two biggest moments, she deserves a lot of credit."

Hayes and Davison first worked together when the former was a member of Arsenal Ladies' coaching staff, before the pair teamed up again in the USA.

"I have known her since she was 16 and I've had a big part to play in her life, so I'm proud to be coaching her again," Hayes added.

"She is a player who I took to Western New York - I drafted her to play out there.

"She has been outstanding since she came from Liverpool. She will thrive in the way that we play."

Chelsea's win at Meadow Lane means they are joint-top of the league with newly-promoted Sunderland after the first Women's Super League One matches.

"I have to credit the players because they carried through with the discipline that we asked of them," continued Hayes. "We have proved that we can come away from home and get the right result.

"We've made massive progress. I've been saying throughout pre-season that this team is more determined. I want us to be known as a tough and gritty team this year."
