Wycombe scored late to beat Northampton but their hopes of grabbing the last League Two automatic promotion spot were ended by Bury's win at Tranmere.

Aaron Holloway put the visitors ahead with a volleyed effort before Nico Yennaris doubled their lead.

The hosts got themselves back in it when Wycombe midfielder Sam Wood put the ball into his own net.

Ryan Cresswell levelled to set up a nervy finish before Alfie Mawson scored deep in added time to win it.

Bury took third spot on the final day, while Wycombe finished a point behind in fourth and will face Plymouth in the play-offs.

Paul Hayes could have put the visitors in front but, after latching onto Mawson's free-kick, his dipping effort hit the crossbar.

A quiet first half livened up when Wycombe scored two goals in three minutes, the first coming when Hayes' blocked shot fell to Holloway, who volleyed the ball home.

Yennaris collected Hayes' through ball and coolly placed the ball past Shwan Jalal to double the lead.

Hayes had a goal disallowed for offside before Northampton pulled a goal back when Wood diverted a cross past Matt Ingram and into his own net.

Cresswell added to Wycombe's misery when he with his equaliser but Mawson's finish in the 97th minute allowed Wycombe to move above Southend into fourth.

Northampton Town manager Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Northampton:

"We have finished where we deserved to finish in the table. There's a lot of work to do in the summer.

"Lasting impressions are big for me and I wanted us to walk out of here tonight in a positive frame of mind. We're feeling flat.

"The boys are going to work extremely hard on their fitness. There will be evolution in the summer."

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"We came here to win, we set up to win and we did. Unfortunately things went against us elsewhere.

"The boys are OK, they're not down because they've won a game, but it's a strange one.

"We've got to get to Saturday and an away trip to Plymouth where we know we're up for a tough couple of legs."

On Matt Ingram's injury: "No news at the moment, I'll let my medical team deal with that and hopefully we can get him ready for the play-offs."
