Terry Butcher 'perfect' for Newport County, says Ray Wilkins

Terry Butcher would be ideal candidate for Newport County job says his former England and Rangers team-mate Ray Wilkins.

Butcher is understood to be in the frame to be County's next manager.

Former Manchester United and AC Milan midfielder Wilkins believes the Exiles should look no further than the former England captain.

"If Newport are in for him he'd be the perfect candidate," said Wilkins.

Newport appear to be set for a third season in League Two after being promoted from the Conference Premier in 2013.

They are three points outside the play-off places with one game remaining, but their inferior goal difference means they are unlikely to overtake seventh-placed Plymouth.

Jimmy Dack has been caretaker boss since Justin Edinburgh left for Gillingham in February, but "does not want to be considered" for the job.

County have started to talk to potential successors with Butcher believed to be in the running.

Butcher's managerial CV includes spells with Coventry, Sunderland, Motherwell, Brentford, Sydney, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Hibernian.

The former Ipswich Town and Rangers defender has been out of work since being sacked as manager of Hibs in June 2014 following their relegation from the Scottish Premier Division.

"He's [Butcher] got immense experience," Wilkins told BBC Radio Wales Sport.

"I'd have to say the last job at Hibernian didn't go as well as Terry would have liked it to have done.

"But certainly the one before at Inverness he forged a smashing little team there.

"When you look back, do you go to the bigger club [Hibernian]? With the upmost respect to Inverness.

"That was the decision Terry made and it didn't work out for him."
