Northampton Town have signed left-back David Buchanan following his release by Preston North End.

The 29-year-old made 89 appearances for Preston since 2012 , but last featured League One play-off winners in January.

"He is an experienced player, a winner and a great professional," boss Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Northampton.

"He hasn't played since January because Preston went on an unbelievable run and Scott Laird is an excellent player but he played 25 matches this season."

Buchanan began his career at Bury, making over 200 appearances for the Shakers, and previously worked with Wilder when the 47-year-old was assistant manager at Gigg Lane.

"I have known him for a long time," Wilder added. "When I was at Bury as assistant manger, I worked with him and I know what a good player he is.

"He is a really good defender, as well as an organiser and I would like to think that he sees us as a forward thinking club that can push on and get into the League above."
