Danny Gabbidon: Wales defender vows to play on after Cardiff exit

Welsh international defender Danny Gabbidon says he wants to prolong his playing career despite not having his contract at Cardiff City renewed.

Gabbidon, 35, rejoined the Bluebirds as a player-coach on a one-year deal in 2014.

He made only two appearances and was briefly co-caretaker manager with Scott Young, but wants to keep playing.

"I still think I've got a lot to offer, another year or two playing," Gabbidon told BBC Radio Wales Sport.

The 49-cap centre-back spent five years at Cardiff after signing from West Bromwich Albion in August 2000 and made 219 appearances in his first spell with the Bluebirds.

Gabbidon, who left Cardiff for West Ham United in 2005, has also played for Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace.

Following his release from the Eagles, the Cwmbran-born player returned to Cardiff as a player-coach.

Along with former Bluebirds centre-back partner Young, Gabbidon had a stint in temporary charge of Cardiff following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But on the pitch, Gabbidon found his opportunities limited and featured in only two games for the Championship side.

In his search for a new club, he played for American MLS side Chicago Fire in a friendly in February.

Although a move to Chicago did not materialise, Gabbidon is hopeful the offers will come.

"With not really playing last season, I could probably play another season," he added.

"I'm looking to carry on playing and seeing what comes up in the next few weeks."
