Goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey may have to leave Crystal Palace to stop his career stagnating, says former Wales number one Paul Jones.

Hennessey is likely to start in goal in Wales' crucial Euro 2016 qualifier against Belgium despite spending most of the season on the sidelines.

The 28-year-old made just two Premier League starts as Palace preferred Julian Speroni ahead of the Welshman.

"He's getting to that period where he needs to be playing," Jones said.

"I wouldn't like to see him sat there for another 12 months and not play at all. He will have to make that decision soon.

"It can only go on for so long, not playing."

Hennessey, 28, moved to Palace from Wolves for £3m in January 2014, but has made just seven appearances in all competitions for the Eagles since then.

Paul Jones was capped 50 times by Wales between 1997 and 2006.

However, the former Yeovil and Stockport loanee has started all five games for second-placed Wales in their unbeaten start to the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

Chris Coleman's side are aiming to reach a first major tournament finals since 1958 and can overtake Belgium at the top of Group B if they beat Marc Wilmots' side at Cardiff City Stadium on Friday, 12 June.

But former Liverpool and Southampton goalkeeper Jones does not think Hennessey's lack of game time will affect his performance.

"I'm sure he'll be fine. He's done very well in the games I've seen," said Jones, who was Wales goalkeeping coach under John Toshack.

"He'll be frustrated but he'll really, really be gunning to go out and perform.

"He's a very good character, a good lad around the dressing room, and I'm sure the boys will be behind him to do well.

"He'll take it in his stride, knowing Wayne. He'll see it as an opportunity.

"He's a quality goalkeeper. I know it's a bit frustrating not playing, but I'm sure he'll come out and perform."
