Women's World Cup: Lucy Bronze confident England can progress

Defender Lucy Bronze is relaxed about England's chances of reaching the Women's World Cup knockout stages despite their 1-0 defeat by France.

Mark Sampson's side are bottom of Group F after Mexico and Colombia drew 1-1.

England's next game is against Mexico - ranked 25th in the world, 19 places below the Lionesses - in Moncton on Saturday at 21:00 BST.

"We have no points but we know two wins out of two and we are qualified so it's fine," said Manchester City's Bronze.

"We performed well against France, the result was not the greatest but we still have every chance of qualifying."

Bronze was picked on the left of midfield as Sampson attempted to nullify France, who are third in Fifa's rankings and one of the tournament favourites.

The 23-year-old said it was "odd" to play in a different position, but added she enjoyed the experience.

And Bronze, who is playing in her first major tournament, hinted Sampson would employ a different approach against Mexico.

"He is very forward-thinking and has a tactical mind," she added. "That showed against France.

"We have players like myself who can play in different positions and do different things when they are asked for, but we will have to wait and see what happens against Mexico."

Bronze, who is recovering from an early season knee injury, said she had no problems with the artificial turf at Moncton Stadium, but did say the hardness of the surface had led to many players complaining of a sore back.

"The surface was quite slippery, it rained all through the first half which we weren't expecting," she said.

"When we played Canada in a friendly it was dry and they did not water it. This time they watered it and it rained so it was like two different surfaces."

Meanwhile, France midfielder Camille Abily will face no retrospective action after catching England defender Laura Bassett with a forearm to the face during the 1-0 defeat.

Bassett, 31, who won her 50th England cap in the match, suffered a black eye following the incident in the 70th minute of the match.

The Football Association will not make a complaint, although manager Sampson said after the game he felt "let down" by the officials.
