The New Saints put one foot in the Champions League second qualifying round after winning the first leg of their first-round tie at B36 Torshavn.

The hosts from the Faroe Islands took an early lead through Hans Pauli Samuelsen.

But the Welsh treble-winners were level within two minutes through Scott Quigley.

Then in the last minute Mike Wilde struck the winner to give Saints an advantage for next Tuesday's home leg.

Saints have not won a Champions League tie since 2011 and it was the Welsh side's first away win in the competition.

Director of football Craig Harrison is confident that his side can seal victory at Park Hall on 7 July and advance to the next round to face Hungarian side Videoton FC.

"We thoroughly deserved the win, it was an open game - a bit too open for my liking sometimes as the away team - but we had another two or three opportunities to maybe score more goals," Harrison said.

"But to be fair, [Saints goalkeeper and captain] Paul Harrison after about 70 minutes has made a great save from a counter-attack.

"We'll be going into the home leg to win it; obviously B36 have got to come out and have got to score, but I'd back us to score at least a goal at home.

"We've got a lot of pace and quality in our team and we're very good on the counter-attack."

Saints forward Adrian Cieslewicz played against his former club and came up against his elder brother Lukasz, who plays for the Faroese champions.

Cieslewicz, a former Manchester City trainee, played for Tórshavn in the Europa League last season.
