Manchester United defender Phil Jones has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until June 2019.

Jones, who moved to Old Trafford from Blackburn Rovers for £17m in 2011, had one year left on his previous deal.

The 23-year-old England international has made 128 appearances for United but has struggled with injuries during his four years at the club.

Manager Louis van Gaal said: "Phil is a relatively young defender who is developing all the time."

Jones made 22 appearances as United finished fourth in the Premier League in 2014-15.

Van Gaal added: "He missed some of last season due to injury but I was impressed by his professionalism and attitude during those periods."

Jones started his career at Blackburn, progressing from the academy to make his senior debut in March 2010.

He won the first of his 17 England caps against Montenegro in October 2011.

Jones, a Premier League winner in 2013, added: "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here so far and am looking forward to continuing my development as a player."
