Europa League: Glentoran lose 4-1 at home to RMSK Zilina

Glentoran's outside hopes of progressing in the Europa League appear to be over after they lost 4-1 at home to MSK Zilinia of Slovakia.

A superb overhead effort by Matej Jelic and Jakub Paur's curling free-kick had the visitors 2-0 up at half-time.

Lukas Cmelik shot in number three on the hour but Glens debutant Conor McMenamin pulled a goal back for the Irish Cup holders six minutes later.

A late Marcus Kane own goal saw the Glens end the first leg three behind.

That means the second leg in Slovakia on 9 July is likely to be a formality for Zilina who were always strong favourites to ease past Eddie Patterson's part-timers.

The Glens looked to be in for a long night when Jelic scored in the 13th minute with a finish of real quality.

Home keeper Elliott Morris got a hand to the overhead kick from about eight yards out, but it found the net.

The second goal in the 20th minute was another sublime strike, Paur curling in the 20-yard free after Calum Birney had been booked for fouling Victor Recovsky.

Cmelik made it 3-0 with a deflected shot after a corner was not cleared.

Then the Glens got their goal with new McMenamin running on to Fra McCaffrey's ball to shoot past keeper Milos Volesak.

But the three-goal gap was restored when defender Kane turned a cross into his own net in the 81st minute.
