Celtic will be ready for Stjarnan tie, insists Ronny Deila

Celtic had problems in defence during their friendly loss to Dukla Prague

Manager Ronny Deila says Celtic have "a lot to work on" ahead of their opening Champions League qualifier.

But he is confident the team will be in good shape when they host Icelandic side Stjarnan on 15 July.

"We know what we can do and we're going to be there when we start in the Champions League," Deila told BBC Scotland.

The Norwegian was talking after a 5-3 friendly loss to Czech outfit Dukla Prague St Mirren Park.

"I'm disappointed by the result and a lot of the performances but a lot of the players have only been back for four days," he added

"Defensively, we need to be on a whole other level. We were too open all over the pitch and we gave away possession too easily."

Sigmundsson's team currently sit sixth in the Iceland top flight

Stjarnan manager Runar Pall Sigmundsson was an interested spectator in Paisley.

"We know Celtic is just starting their pre-season and we know they are a very good team, with great players and a great coach," he said.

"It's good for us to see how they are trying to play.

"There is a very big gap between the teams - this is our first time in the Champions League. We are semi-professional - our players don't have great salaries."

Stjarnan, who are 10 games into their league campaign, are familiar with Scottish football having knocked Motherwell out of Europa League qualifying last season.

They also upset Polish side Lech Poznan before a heavy aggregate defeat to Inter Milan, the team that would later end Celtic's European adventure.

"We like to play in Europe," added Sigmundsson. "It's a great feeling for everyone around the club and we will enjoy the moment.

"Everyone needs to have the game of their lives for us to get a result.

"There is always a chance in football. We know it will be very difficult but we are optimistic. We believe in our team and in our system."
