Swansea City ended their pre-season with a lively draw against Deportivo La Coruna ahead of the Premier League kick-off away to champions Chelsea.

Manager Garry Monk gave outings to his three major outfield signings - Andre Ayew, Franck Tabanou and Eder.

But the Swans could not break down the resolute Spanish visitors, although Jonjo Shelvey was in dynamic form.

The midfielder threatened the visitors goal in the first half, which saw Ayew fire wide when well placed.

A scuffle which saw four players booked following Deportivo claims for a penalty enlivened the second half.

Jefferson Monterro, Tabanou and Ki Sung-Yeung all went close to earning the Swans victory.

Overall Monk will be pleased his side appeared to escape without injury from a competitive game, in which Shelvey, the busy Bafetimbi Gomis and debutant Ayew were the pick and his defence were rarely troubled.

"First half we started really well on the front foot, had a few chances and probably should have got the goal when we had that momentum," Monk said.

"We wee never out of control of the game but it kind of went in spurts, a couple of minutes of action and then a period of no action.

"All in all at this stage of the season it was a good workout, good minutes on the pitch for the players, but in the final third we were lacking that final touch."
