Cardiff City's David Marshall praised as West Brom move stalls

David Marshall is under contract with Cardiff City until the end of the 2017-18 season

David Marshall's attitude has been praised by Cardiff City manager Russell Slade while speculation continues over the goalkeeper's future.

West Brom have made a bid for Scotland international Marshall but have not met Cardiff's valuation of about £5m.

Marshall's three-match ban ends after Saturday's visit to QPR and Slade says he would have no issue in selecting him to face Blackburn on Tuesday.

"He's very professional. He's training really well at the minute," he said.

Slade added that West Brom's interest in Marshall has "gone very quiet" and hopes the 30-year-old will ultimately stay at the club.

Simon Moore deputised for Marshall in Cardiff's opening Championship game of the season at home to Fulham, but he gifted the visitors the opening goal in the 1-1 draw by fumbling a cross.

Ben Wilson, 23, started in goal in a much-changed Cardiff side in Tuesday's 1-0 win over Wimbledon in the Capital One Cup.

Moore is expected to reclaim his place to face QPR on Saturday, but Slade will have a decision to make on Tuesday when Marshall becomes available to play for the first time this season.

"He's our number one keeper but we'll see how Simon goes," said Slade.

"That's what it's about - competition for places is healthy.

"At the end of the day, you've got to pick a team to win a football match. That's what it boils down to."

Winger Craig Noone is pushing for a starting place on Saturday after scoring both goals in the opening two games.

And Slade said: "Craig has done great. He has scored two goals in two games, a terrific response for not starting the first two games of the season.

"So he is going to be pushing every single game - if not starting."

Cardiff will still be without striker Federico Macheda and defenders Bruno Ecuele Manga and Ben Turner on Saturday because of injury.

But striker Kenwyne Jones is "getting closer" to a first league outing having been a late substitute in Tuesday's cup victory.

"It's great to have him back in the group. We know how strong he is in both boxes," Slade added.

"He is phenomenal in both boxes. Defensively he is so strong and there are very few better than Kenwyne in this league in the opponents' box as well, particularly in the air."
