Northampton not looking to have 'tummies tickled' at Newcastle

Northampton Town manager Chris Wilder says his side are not travelling to Newcastle in the League Cup second round to have their "tummies tickled".

The Cobblers, who lost 2-0 to Plymouth in League Two on Saturday, visit the Premier League side on Tuesday.

"We want to do ourselves justice - we feel we're a good side at this level," Wilder told BBC Radio Northampton.

"We don't want to go there to make the numbers up or have our tummies tickled."

Northampton, who have won two of their opening four league matches, beat League One side Blackpool 3-0 in the first round of the competition to set up a trip to St James' Park.

Wilder's side could face their former striker Ivan Toney, who joined the Magpies in the summer.

But the Cobblers have a history of causing upsets in the competition, having beaten Liverpool on penalties in 2010.

"The game starts at 0-0 and there's always an opportunity we can get a result, and it's what we'll be thinking and believing," said Wilder.

"This club knows that because it went to Liverpool a few years ago and had an incredible night for the supporters and players, so it can happen.

"This club has had a fantastic record in the League Cup, but we know there's a lot of things that will have to go for us on the night, but if you don't think you can get a result it's not worth getting on the bus."
